AI Completes First Transaction Independently in France
Revolut has announced the completion of the first payment initiated entirely by artificial intelligence in France. This secure test, conducted in collaboration with Visa, heralds a transformation in the world of payments.
Revolut Conducts AI Payment Test
While Elon Musk expresses a desire to replace traditional banking, Revolut has successfully executed a payment test fully managed by artificial intelligence. This groundbreaking initiative, undertaken with Visa, marks a first in France. The primary objective was to "better understand how this type of payment could function in real-world conditions."
In practice, an AI can handle all stages of the purchasing process, including payment, with the customer's explicit authorization. During the test, a Visa agent initiated a transaction with the seller Cleverbridge. Simultaneously, Visa Payment Passkey was responsible for verifying authentication. The challenge was to ensure "customer consent, issuer controls, and the maintenance of existing protections." The test was a resounding success, representing a "significant step for the future of AI-powered commerce."
A Drive to Revolutionize Payments
Revolut's stated ambition is clear: to "shape the future of payments." By integrating AI into the process, the company aims to make everyday transactions "simpler, faster, and more intuitive." Revolut emphasizes that customers remain "fully in control of their decisions," reassuring them that the AI will not make purchases independently; user validation remains mandatory.
The entire operation was facilitated by leveraging Visa's existing payment infrastructure, ensuring the "protection of payments, card security, as well as identity checks and real-time fraud monitoring."
A First Experimentation in France
This is the first fully AI-driven payment experiment conducted in France. However, a similar test had previously taken place in Europe. In March, Santander, in collaboration with Mastercard, executed Europe's first end-to-end payment managed by an artificial intelligence agent.
Artificial intelligence tools are increasingly becoming a part of consumers' daily lives, utilized for tasks ranging from research to purchase decisions. Revolut notes that "51% of the French population uses generative AI tools." The company, valued at 115 billion dollars, is committed to advancing in this direction.
