How to Live on Earth Review: Benedict Cumberbatch’s Positive Approach to Climate Crisis

This documentary, presented by Benedict Cumberbatch, offers a refreshing counterpoint to the overwhelming negativity often associated with discussions of environmental destruction and the climate crisis. Instead of dwelling on despair and anger, Fredi Devas’s film, featuring various contributors and filmed at London’s National History Museum, highlights tangible, positive actions that individuals and communities can undertake to protect the planet.

While the film’s sometimes gentle, educational tone and its score, which explicitly cues emotions of hope and euphoria, may feel geared towards a younger audience or be somewhat overt, it undeniably provides valuable insights. It revisits the environmental impact of meat consumption, particularly the extensive land clearance required for cattle farming, but does so without resorting to guilt-tripping. The film acknowledges that plant-based meat alternatives, such as those derived from mycelium, are still evolving but are showing consistent improvement.

The documentary also explores bio-investment initiatives, business models that actively contribute to the regeneration of the natural world, which serves as the origin of our raw materials. An example presented is a forest healing instructor in South Korea who utilizes woodland settings for therapeutic purposes. While the concept of “tree hugging” might invite lighthearted jokes, the restorative power of natural environments is presented as undeniable.

Furthermore, naturalist and broadcaster Dan O’Neill’s visit to Singapore offers a different perspective. Rather than expressing dismay at the city-state’s intensely capitalist nature and strict regulations, O’Neill commends its successful integration of green spaces within its urban landscape.
