Linda Perry: Cancer, Abuse, and a Documentary About Her Life

Singer, producer, and prolific songwriter Linda Perry, renowned for her work with 4 Non Blondes and for crafting hits for artists like Christina Aguilera and Courtney Love, found herself unexpectedly at the center of an intimate documentary. The film, by director Don Hardy, delves into Perry’s experiences with illness, familial trauma, and a personal identity crisis.

Perry initially agreed to let Hardy, a friend and collaborator on the score for his 2020 film “Citizen Penn,” document her creative process in her studio. Her initial intention was simply to gather content for her Instagram. “So he just started showing up and I soon forgot he was there,” Perry recalled.

After several weeks, Hardy presented Perry with 30 minutes of edited footage, suggesting its potential for a significant documentary. “He said: ‘We think there’s an incredible documentary to be made here,'” Perry recounted. “And so I said: ‘OK, go ahead but don’t talk to me about it. I don’t want to know anything. Just do what you’re going to do and if I said it or did it, I’ll stand by it.’ And then things just started to go cuckoo for me.”
