Enchanting yet subtly unsettling, Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth marks the second successful video game adaptation in two years based on Tove Jansson’s classic children’s books. The Moomin stories, with their distinct blend of contentedness, gentle melancholy, and mild peril, might initially seem an unusual source for the often action-packed world of video games.
These distinctive, hippo-like white creatures are typically content with life in Moominvalley, only venturing out when the weather is particularly favorable. However, the small Norwegian studio Hyper Games is now releasing its second charming adaptation of Jansson’s work.
Their first offering, Snufkin: Melody of Moomin Valley (released in 2024), placed players in the role of the resourceful free spirit, Snufkin. In this game, players worked to dismantle overly regimented nature parks while evading the authorities who enforced them.
The newest title, Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth, follows young Moomintroll as he awakens during the deepest part of winter. With his parents still in hibernation, Moomintroll finds himself alone in a cold and unfamiliar environment.

Enchanting yet subtly unsettling, Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth is the second great game in as many years based on the classic children’s books. The Moomin stories, with their distinctive blend of contentment, gentle melancholy, and mild peril, may seem an unlikely fit for the action-heavy medium of video games.
Rather than embarking on swashbuckling adventures, these milk-white, hippo-esque creatures prefer to potter about Moominvalley, only venturing further if the weather conditions are just right. Yet a small Norwegian video game studio, Hyper Games, is now on its second exquisitely charming Jansson adaptation.
The first, Snufkin: Melody of Moomin Valley (released in 2024), put players in control of the wily free spirit, Snufkin, as he dismantled overly ordered nature parks and evaded authority-loving wardens. The latest, Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth, sees young Moomintroll wake up at night in the dead of winter. With his parents still hibernating, the creature is all alone, thrust into a cold and unfamiliar world.
