The Wasp Review: A Tormented Reunion Lacking Bite

Morgan Lloyd Malcolm’s 2015 drama, “The Wasp,” presented at London’s Southwark Playhouse, explores a dark revenge fantasy. The play centers on Heather and Carla, former schoolmates who reunite decades after Carla’s cruel bullying campaign, which culminated in a severe act of abuse against Heather. The reunion is ostensibly for reconciliation, but Heather harbors a hidden agenda.

The narrative starkly contrasts the lives of the two women. While Carla is depicted as struggling, facing financial hardship, an unwanted fifth pregnancy, and an unhappy relationship, Heather has achieved significant professional and financial success. Heather subtly asserts her dominance, making Carla aware of the reversal of fortune.

Despite its ambitious plot filled with unexpected turns, the production’s stilted presentation diminishes the sense of peril and dramatic tension.

English Translation:

Morgan Lloyd Malcolm’s revenge drama, staged at the Southwark Playhouse in London, delves into a dark fantasy of retribution. The play features a reunion between a former school bully and her victim, set against the backdrop of a baroque narrative. Heather, once the target of Carla, a former friend turned tormentor whose relentless bullying led to a shocking incident of abuse, finds herself confronting her abuser years later. They meet ostensibly to reconcile, but Heather has a sinister ulterior motive.

The intervening years have clearly seen a reversal of fortunes. Carla is now living a life of hardship, struggling financially, facing a fifth pregnancy without joy, and trapped in an unhappy relationship. In stark contrast, Heather has become a successful professional. She subtly undermines Carla with barbed remarks, highlighting her own superior position.

While the play boasts numerous rug-pulling twists, the rigid staging unfortunately leaves the audience with little sense of genuine jeopardy.
