Ready for their close-ups: celebrity passport photos

In 1953, Dave Sharkey, a former professional boxer, and his wife, Ann, established a photographic studio on Oxford Street in London. This studio distinguished itself by promising prints ‘ready in 10 minutes,’ a speed of service unprecedented in the city at the time. Strategically situated near the US embassy and the renowned Selfridges department store, the studio, which was later managed by the couple’s son, Philip, evolved into a vibrant hub for a diverse clientele. Artists, actors, musicians, and athletes alike frequented the establishment, all seeking to have their passport photographs taken. Notable figures such as Muhammad Ali, Bianca and Mick Jagger, David Hockney, and Tilda Swinton are among the many celebrities who posed for their passport pictures at this iconic location. The book “Passport Photo Service,” published by Phaidon Press, showcases an extensive collection of over 300 celebrity portraits spanning from the 1950s to the 2010s.
