Moulin Rouge! at 25: An Oral History from Cast and Crew

The creation of Baz Luhrmann’s “Moulin Rouge!” was a chaotic yet brilliant whirlwind, a film that revitalized the musical genre with its audacious sensory overload. Set in turn-of-the-century Paris, it depicted the tragic romance between Satine, a dazzling cabaret performer and courtesan, and Christian, a struggling English poet. Their story unfolded through vibrant song-and-dance sequences featuring mashups of beloved pop songs.

By its release in 2001, Australian director Baz Luhrmann had already established his distinctive filmmaking approach with “Strictly Ballroom” and “Romeo + Juliet.” This style, characterized by rapid editing, flamboyant visuals, and modern music, reached new heights with “Moulin Rouge!” – the concluding chapter of his Red Curtain trilogy.

The production itself was a spectacle. Stagehands once famously doused the floor with Coca-Cola, Ewan McGregor was seen wielding a lightsaber, and there were even accounts of the film’s Oscar statues being used in… unconventional ways at the post-ceremony party. Director Baz Luhrmann, along with actors like Jim Broadbent and members of the cast and crew, have come forward to share their recollections of bringing this ambitious film to life.

One poignant memory shared by the team involved the physical toll of the filmmaking process. There was a concerning incident where Nicole Kidman’s rib re-fractured while she was being laced into her elaborate corset, highlighting the demanding nature of the costumes and performance required for the film.
