Royal Opera House Appeals for Release of Georgian Bass Singer Imprisoned for Democracy Protests

The Royal Opera House in London has formally requested that Keir Starmer, the leader of the UK Labour Party, step in regarding the situation of Paata Burchuladze. Burchuladze, a globally recognized bass singer, has been incarcerated in Georgia since October. He faces charges of orchestrating a coup against the nation’s authoritarian leadership.

The 71-year-old artist has a distinguished career, having graced stages at the Royal Opera House and the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. He has also had the honor of performing alongside legendary figures such as Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo, and José Carreras.

Burchuladze’s arrest occurred after he participated in a demonstration outside the presidential palace in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. Last week, he was sentenced to seven years in prison. Burchuladze himself remarked to the court that, given his age, this sentence was akin to a life imprisonment.
