Theatre Streaming Enhances Live Attendance, New Research Suggests

Contrary to initial concerns, popular initiatives like NT Live and NT at Home, which offer streamed and cinema versions of stage productions, are not diminishing attendance at live theatre performances. Instead, this research indicates that these platforms are cultivating a more adventurous and engaged audience base.

The National Theatre commissioned research, conducted by the agency Indigo, to investigate audience perceptions of filmed theatre. The findings were presented by the NT’s director, Indhu Rubasingham, who acknowledged the significant questions raised by the surge in filmed theatre. A primary concern was whether initiatives like NT Live and NT at Home would negatively impact live attendance. However, the research suggests the opposite: these accessible options are actually broadening audiences’ horizons and encouraging them to explore theatre more actively, both on-screen and in person.
