Seasonal Quartet: Ali Smith and New European Ensemble Review – Where Words and Music Harmonize

4 июля 2026 г.Филипп Радмиров1 мин

At London's Spitalfields Festival, the New European Ensemble presented an unconventional concert, flipping the script on artistic inspiration. Instead of music about music, the audience experienced music inspired by words. Four composers—Kate Moore (Australia), Alice Yeung (Hong Kong), Seung-Won Oh (South Korea), and Sara Zamboni (Italy)—crafted new pieces in response to the novels of Ali Smith's "Seasonal Quartet."

The "Seasonal Quartet" itself explores themes of interconnectedness, where paths cross, patterns recur, and lives and stories resonate. This musical project expanded that intricate web, commissioning new works from these four talented female composers. The program was further enriched by pieces from Peter Maxwell Davies, Anna Thorvaldsdottir, and Kinan Azmeh, guiding the audience through a narrative cycle from autumn to summer.

The concert achieved ravishing harmonies and a captivating interplay, demonstrating how literature and music can beautifully inform and elevate one another. The innovative approach offered a unique experience, highlighting the profound connections that can be forged between different artistic mediums.
