Mighty Sparrow, Trinidad and Tobago's 'Calypso King of the World,' Dies at 91

Slinger Francisco, known on stage as the Mighty Sparrow and hailed as the “calypso king of the world,” has died at 91. His family confirmed his peaceful passing surrounded by loved ones in New York on Sunday, stating it followed a brief illness.

Francisco rose to prominence in calypso music with his 1956 hit "Jean and Dinah." His family described him as an "institution in the entertainment industry, well admired for his skill and finesse as a singer, songwriter and mentor; beloved by many."

The Trinbago Unified Calypsonians’ Organisation remembered Sparrow as “a defining voice of our culture, a master storyteller and a towering figure whose music helped carry calypso from Trinidad and Tobago to the world.”

Born in Grand Roy, Grenada, in July 1935, Francisco moved with his parents to Trinidad and Tobago as a toddler in 1937. Trinidad and Tobago, the birthplace of calypso, became the stage for the emergence of the Mighty Sparrow, who produced numerous hits like "Both of Them," "Congo Man," "Mr. Walker," and "The Lizard."

Affectionately known as Birdie, Francisco recorded hundreds of songs over a six-decade career. He performed internationally, including at venues like New York City’s Madison Square Garden. Trinidadian cultural historian and author Dr Rudolph Ottley stated, "The Mighty Sparrow was the supreme entertainer, a cultural revolutionary and one of the world’s greatest Calypsonians."

Francisco received national honors from Trinidad and Tobago and an honorary doctor of letters from the University of the West Indies in 1987.
