The Mekons on ‘Where Were You?’: From Art School to Bowie’s Praise

The Mekons’ journey began with a shared artistic vision. Many of the band’s founders met while studying fine art at Leeds University. In December 1976, a pivotal moment occurred when they attended the Anarchy tour at a local polytechnic. While the Sex Pistols impressed, it was The Clash, with their distinctive paint-splattered attire, who truly resonated. Witnessing them perform sparked a realization: “That could be me up there.”

Reflecting on their seminal track ‘Where Were You?’, the band members describe its core theme: loneliness. This was a deliberate contrast to the prevalent “It’s Friday night, let’s have sex” macho attitude often found in rock music of that era. The band’s aspiration reached new heights when David Bowie himself drew a comparison between The Mekons and the legendary T. Rex, a compliment they considered unparalleled.
