The Woman Who Loves Luxury Goods 2: why the Devil Wears Prada title goes back to basics in Vietnam

Foreign film titles are frequently adapted for different markets, and these changes often prove to be improvements. Who wouldn’t be intrigued by a film titled “I Will Marry a Prostitute to Save Money?”

Given that it’s a sequel to a modern classic – an iconic film that introduced numerous memorable quotes and phrases into our cultural vocabulary – one might expect “The Devil Wears Prada 2” to effortlessly draw in an audience. However, this assumption would be incorrect.

For instance, someone unfamiliar with the original movie might mistakenly believe, due to the invocation of Satan in the title, that it’s a horror film. Alternatively, the name could be perceived as the title of an intense independent documentary exploring the significance of designer clothing in our current era of late-stage capitalism.

Therefore, it’s far more logical to adopt the approach taken in Vietnam, where the film is simply titled “The Woman Who Loves Luxury Goods 2.” This title directly and clearly communicates the film’s subject matter, making it accessible to a wider audience, including those who may not have seen the original.
