Tim Heidecker on Mocking Infowars’ ‘Insanity’

Comedian Tim Heidecker is preparing to take the helm as the new creative director of Infowars, should the satirical newspaper The Onion’s bid to acquire the controversial platform be approved by a Texas court. For years, Infowars, founded by Alex Jones, has been a notorious outlet for a barrage of baseless conspiracy theories, including claims of a stolen 2020 election, alleged “chemicals in the water turning frogs gay,” and deeply harmful misinformation regarding the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. These theories have not only spread online but have also had tangible real-world repercussions, alongside the sale of peculiar dietary supplements.

However, The Onion envisions a starkly different future for Infowars. The satirical publication has been working for several years towards a takeover of the site, a process complicated by ongoing legal battles stemming from Jones’s false statements about the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre. With the court’s pending approval, Infowars could soon transition into the hands of The Onion and Heidecker, an artist renowned for his surreal comedy and his satirical critiques of the far-right.

Heidecker’s ambitious plan aims to repurpose Infowars, transforming a potent political weapon into a center for comedy that directly challenges and subverts the core tenets of what Infowars once represented. His stated intention is to “mock the site’s insanity,” signaling a deliberate and sharp pivot from the original platform’s harmful rhetoric to one of satirical deconstruction.
