This year’s International Booker Prize features a captivating array of shortlisted works, spanning diverse geographical origins – from Brazil to Taiwan – and a spectrum of literary styles, ranging from widely accessible narratives to experimental pieces. Reflecting a growing trend, independent publishers have again been recognized for their dedication to promoting translated fiction, with four out of the six nominated titles originating from such presses. Furthermore, the persistent advocacy for greater recognition of translators is yielding positive results: for the first time in the prize’s decade-long history, each of the six featured books proudly displays the translator’s name on its cover. Below is an overview of each contender’s potential, leading up to the winner’s announcement on May 19th.
German-Iranian author Shida Bazyar, in her novel The Nights Are Quiet in Tehran (published by Scribe and translated by Ruth Martin), poignantly reminds us that the people of Iran have endured being victims of history on multiple occasions. The narrative unfolds through the perspectives of four members of an Iranian family, chronicling their experiences over a span of 30 years. In 1979, the young Behzad initially embraces the Islamic revolution that overthrows the Shah, harboring hopes for a communist utopia akin to “a new Cuba.” However, his aspirations are quickly dashed. Instead, he finds himself surrounded by individuals who have seemingly been waiting for an opportunity to exert power and dominance. Subsequently, Behzad and his wife, Nahid, seek refuge in Germany. Nahid’s story then takes the narrative forward in 1989, followed by their daughter, Laleh, in 1999.
