‘I want to hit 100’: Derek Jacobi on Aids, ageing and failing to boil an egg

The towering figure of stage and screen, Derek Jacobi, at 87, still finds looking in the mirror a challenge. In a candid conversation at his home with his husband, he opens up about moments of tears, past encounters with Daniel Craig, intimidating directors, and the simple pleasures of white wine and a restful nap.

Derek Jacobi’s voice, a familiar and richly nuanced instrument, fills the living room as he converses with the photographer. Meanwhile, in the kitchen, his husband, Richard Clifford, is preparing coffee. He reveals their enduring partnership of 47 years, met when Jacobi was 22 and Clifford was 39. “I’m a child snatcher,” Jacobi humorously declares from the adjacent room.
