However, the recently unveiled vision for Donald Trump’s presidential library presents a stark departure: a brash, bookless concept dominated by an enormous golden statue, arguably the most ostentatious proposal yet. The timing and substance of the announcement were so striking that many perceived it as an elaborate April Fool's joke.
The old adage that you "can't gild a turd" seems to be challenged here, as this plan suggests the opposite is entirely achievable. At the heart of the proposed 47-story skyscraper on Miami’s waterfront – symbolizing the potential 47th presidency – is a colossal golden likeness of Trump, his gilded fist triumphantly raised, evoking the imagery of authoritarian leaders. Such an aureate monstrosity would not appear out of place alongside monuments found in cities like Pyongyang or Ashgabat. Indeed, it draws parallels to Turkmenistan’s former president, Saparmurat Niyazov, another despot known for his suspiciously luxuriant coiffure, who famously outdid himself with a $12 million gold statue designed to perpetually rotate and face the sun.
